As we bid farewell to Hispanic Heritage Month, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact we were able to make this year, thanks to each and every one of you. Our involvement in Hispanic Heritage Month marked a significant step forward in our commitment to supporting the Hispanic community and advancing financial wellness. Let's take a closer look at the highlights of this year's celebration:
Viva La Fiesta Stage Sponsorship
This year, we proudly served as the stage sponsor for Viva La Fiesta, Jacksonville's premier Hispanic Heritage Festival. Our prominent presence at this event showcased our dedication to the community, and it allowed us to connect with a diverse and engaged audience.
Our booth at the festival served as a hub for connecting with attendees and spreading financial literacy. We engaged the audience, answered questions, and provided valuable resources to those seeking financial wellness.
Latina Radio 92.1 Interview
As a result of our stage sponsorship, we were invited to Latina Radio 92.1 for a brief interview on their morning show. This opportunity helped us share our mission and values with a broader audience, strengthening our position as financial educators.
Juntos Avanzamos Cultural Inclusion Challenge
I am delighted to share that several of our coworkers took up the Juntos Avanzamos Cultural Inclusion Challenge and succeeded. Their efforts exemplify our dedication to inclusivity and cultural awareness.
Achieving the Dream Scholarship
Once again, Alive sponsored the Achieving the Dream scholarship, a vital initiative aimed at helping LatinX students overcome financial obstacles in their pursuit of education through the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Graduation rates for LatinX students at both 2-year and 4-year colleges have faced challenges, primarily due to financial constraints. By providing this scholarship, we are truly inspiring financial wellness and making a significant impact on these students' lives.
As we move forward, let's carry the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month with us every day. The positive outcomes of our involvement in these events are a testament to our collective dedication to financial wellness and community development. I am immensely proud of the work we do and the impact we create.
It’s Friday the 13th and there is another haunt in the world of financial deceit we must discuss- the silent thief. In today's interconnected world, where personal information is exchanged with a mere click, the menace of identity theft looms larger than ever before. This article serves as your guide to understanding, preventing, and combating the stealthy thief that is identity theft.
The Stealthy Nature of Identity Theft
Identity theft is akin to a silent intruder, operating covertly and striking when you least expect it. It occurs when someone gains unauthorized access to your personal information, such as your Social Security number, credit card details, or bank account information, and uses it for fraudulent purposes.
Common Tactics Employed by Identity Thieves
Understanding the tactics used by identity thieves is the first line of defense. They may:
Phish for Information: Sending deceptive emails, texts, or calls to trick you into revealing sensitive data.
Data Breaches: Exploiting security vulnerabilities to access large databases of personal information.
Stolen Wallets or Documents: Physical theft of your wallet, documents, or mail containing personal data.
Social Engineering: Manipulating individuals or posing as trusted entities to extract information.
The Ripple Effect of Identity Theft
The repercussions of identity theft can be far-reaching. It can lead to financial losses, damage to your credit score, and even legal troubles if the thief commits crimes in your name. The emotional toll is equally significant, as victims often grapple with feelings of violation, mistrust, and stress.
Prevention is Your Best Defense
Proactive measures are your shield against identity theft:
Strong Passwords: Use unique, complex passwords for online accounts, and consider using a reputable password manager.
Secure Your Documents: Safeguard important documents in a locked cabinet or a secure digital folder.
Monitor Your Credit: Regularly check your credit reports for suspicious activity. Many services offer free annual credit reports.
Beware of Phishing: Be cautious of unsolicited communications and verify the authenticity of requests for personal information.
Protect Your Social Security Number: Avoid carrying your Social Security card, and be cautious when sharing this number.
Shred Sensitive Documents: Dispose of documents containing personal information by shredding them.
Use Two-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication for your online accounts whenever possible.
Immediate Action if You Suspect Identity Theft
If you suspect identity theft, swift action is crucial:
Contact Credit Bureaus: Report the theft to the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and request a fraud alert or credit freeze.
File a Report: Report the identity theft to your local law enforcement agency and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Monitor Accounts: Regularly monitor your financial accounts for unauthorized transactions.
Seek Professional Help: Consider enlisting the services of an identity theft restoration company or legal counsel to guide you through the recovery process.
Educating Others
Sharing your knowledge about identity theft with family and friends is a vital step in the fight against this silent thief. Encourage others to take precautions and stay vigilant.
In conclusion, while identity theft is a persistent threat, you are not powerless against it. By understanding its tactics and implementing preventive measures, you can fortify your defenses and minimize the risk of falling victim to this silent intruder. Vigilance and proactive measures are your best allies in safeguarding your identity and financial well-being.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October. On this day we celebrate the spirit of the global credit union movement. This is a day to reflect on the history of the movement, celebrate achievements, and share experiences.
Where it all began
In 1846 Germany suffered from a crop failure that led to famine. Hermann Schulze-Delitsch took it upon himself to make a difference in his community. He founded a cooperatively owned mill and bakery but wanted to more. In 1852 he founded the first “people’s bank” which provided credit services to entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen established a credit society also in Germany in 1849. His credit society grew until in 1864 he organized a credit union for farmers.
Credit Unions Come to North America
Credit Unions grew popular throughout Europe and to communities around the world. In 1901, Alphonse and Dorimene Desjardins founded La Caisse Populaire de Levis. With a simple deposit of ten cents, he began the credit union movement in North America. Shortly after the credit union’s successful launch, Alphonse teamed up with two Americans, Edward Filene and Roy Bergengren to establish credit unions in the United States.
Credit Unions Today
Today, Credit Unions are well established throughout the world. There are credit unions in 118 countries and 375 million members worldwide. We have endured financial storms through the years and due to the movement’s principles and self regulation; have never needed a government bailout. Credit Unions are still the most trusted financial institution and will continue to stay true to their purpose of “people helping people” into the future.
How to get involved
This year, for International Credit Union Day, we will be highlighting credit unions from around the world, past and present. We will have signage in English and Spanish for all of our branches. We are sending out coloring sheets for you and the members to use. Get creative, and then submit your entry to see who is the most creative in their International Credit Union Art for a chance to win a free coffee! We will also have a large social media presence centered around International Credit Union Day.
As the air grows chillier and pumpkin spice reigns supreme, it's that time of year when we all relish a spine-tingling tale. Among the most chilling specters in this world are the haunting scams, encompassing phishing, tech support, romance, and lottery scams.
Phishing
Phishing stands as the most prevalent form of cybercrime, with a staggering 3.4 billion phishing emails dispatched daily. These deceptive emails often masquerade as legitimate entities, such as electric companies or reputable charities. They prey on a sense of urgency, enticing recipients to click a link that solicits personal information or payment details. While we, as employees, may discern the warning signs, many of our members remain vulnerable to this spine-chilling scam.
Tech Support
Remember the movie "Scream," where Casey Becker unsuspectingly answers a seemingly harmless call, only to encounter a sinister character? Tech support scams mirror this scenario. Scammers impersonate tech agents, seemingly providing assistance for virus or computer issues. Their veneer of legitimacy may even extend to offering tiered responses from managers or supervisors. They might request remote access or demand payment for services related to fictitious problems. This is yet another prolific and alarming scam.
Romance
Much like the black widow enticing a partner with the illusion of romance before consuming them, romance scams follow a similar script. Victims encounter their seemingly perfect partner online, embarking on an elaborate and immersive relationship. Gradually, matters escalate as the scammer seeks personal identifiers and probes into financial matters. Soon enough, requests for money emerge, ranging from modest sums to exorbitant amounts. In 2022, nearly 70,000 people reported falling victim to romance scams, tallying losses of $1.3 billion. The aftermath leaves victims feeling betrayed, heartbroken, and grappling with financial losses.
Lottery
"CONGRATULATIONS! Your life is about to change!" – Lottery scams may initially appear enjoyable, but if you encounter them, it's best to flee. Similar to sinister clowns, they lure victims via phone calls, emails, or even mailed checks. These scams manipulate emotions by building hope, creating urgency, and instilling excitement. Victims are informed of their "win" but are required to pay fees or taxes before claiming their prize. Often, the fee pales in comparison to the purported winnings, leading victims to hastily send money, only to discover it was all a ruse.
As evident, these eerie scams haunt our members and ourselves, irrespective of the time of year. Always exercise caution and deliberation before divulging personal information or finances, and spread this message among our members. A scam only becomes terrifying when it succeeds, so adopt the role of an investigator and scrutinize anything that appears too good to be true or potentially harmful to our community.

This past Saturday, the 2023 NAMI Walks Jacksonville event, hosted by the Winston Family YMCA in Riverside, saw an impressive turnout of over 400 community members. The day kicked off at 8 a.m. with Alive prominently represented at the NAMI Walks Wellness Fair. Mark and I engaged in meaningful conversations with hundreds of attendees, discussing our commitment to establishing a "Financial Zen Zone" for those grappling with the weighty burden of financial stress, all through our comprehensive and free financial wellness resources. As part of our outreach, we distributed Money Tree planter kits featuring Alive's information.
In addition to our presence at the fair, our dedicated team participated in the walk/run event. A special shout-out goes to Jess Parmenter, Shirley Rincon, and Andre Ruiz-Feijoo for their support, showcasing to all of Jacksonville that the Alive Team deeply cares about the community.
It's essential to recognize that a significant portion of event participants either confront their own battles with mental illness or support someone who does. While mental illness often conjures images of depression and anxiety, its impact extends far beyond these facets. Mental illness can touch anyone's life. Let's delve into how mental illness intersects with financial well-being.
Mental Illness & Financial Wellness
Financial stress ranks as a prominent catalyst for anxiety and depression in our society. Astonishingly, 62% of Americans admit to feeling stressed about their financial situation. Furthermore, financial stress correlates with a 13% higher likelihood of developing mental health issues.
As the weight of trying to make ends meet permeates one's daily existence, a perilous path can emerge. Individuals grappling with high financial stress are 3x more likely to experience symptoms of depression. An astonishing 70% of adults state that financial stress adversely affects their mental health.
How Alive makes a difference

Becoming part of a supportive environment can lead to a 20% improvement in mental well-being. When a member reaches out to consult with Alive's Financial Wellness Coach, we can immediately make an impact on their mental health. The credit union movement has seen its fair share of visionary leaders who have shaped the industry and empowered countless individuals and communities. Among these trailblazers, several remarkable Hispanic leaders have left an unforgettable impact.
Esteban E. Torres
Esteban Torres, a former U.S. Congressman, played a pivotal role in advocating for credit unions at the federal level. He championed legislative changes that allowed credit unions to expand their reach and better serve their members. Torres' tireless efforts paved the way for increased access to affordable financial services for communities across the nation.
Pablo DeFilippi
Pablo DeFilippi, a recognized leader in the credit union industry, has dedicated his career to fostering cooperative development, especially within Hispanic communities. He served as the Senior Vice President of Membership and Network Engagement at Inclusiv, formerly known as the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, where he worked tirelessly to expand the reach of credit unions serving low-income and underserved populations.
Rudy Hanley
Rudy Hanley, the former CEO of SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, made history as the first Hispanic CEO of a billion-dollar credit union. Under his leadership, SchoolsFirst thrived and became one of the largest credit unions in the United States. Hanley's success not only highlighted the potential for diversity in leadership but also inspired others to follow in his footsteps.
Gigi Hyland
Gigi Hyland, a prominent credit union leader and advocate, and currently serves the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) as Executive Director. Her tenure has seen a focus on financial literacy, inclusion, and innovation. Hyland's vision and dedication to the credit union movement continue to inspire positive change within the industry.
The credit union movement owes much of its success and growth to the remarkable contributions of these Hispanic leaders. Their unwavering commitment to financial inclusion, advocacy for policy change, dedication to cooperative development, and visionary leadership have shaped the credit union landscape and improved the lives of countless individuals and communities. As we celebrate these trailblazers, let us also be inspired to continue their work, ensuring that credit unions remain beacons of hope and financial empowerment for all.
In the vibrant city of Jacksonville, Florida, one of our most rewarding missions is to provide financial services that empower and uplift our diverse communities. Among these communities, the Hispanic population plays a crucial role in the cultural and economic tapestry of our city. As a Juntos Avanzamos Credit Union, we have the honor of witnessing firsthand the impact of providing financial services to the Hispanic community.
community statistics
11.3% of the Jacksonville population identify as LatinX or Hispanic
1 in 4 Floridians are of Hispanic descent
Hispanics account for 29% of consumer buying power in Florida
Understanding the Financial Struggles
Before we dive into the positive impact, let's take a moment to understand some of the unique financial struggles that members of the Hispanic community in Jacksonville may face:
For many Hispanic residents, English may not be their first language. This language barrier can make it challenging to access financial services, understand complex documents, or communicate effectively with financial institutions. Some individuals in the Hispanic community may be unbanked or underbanked, meaning they have limited access to traditional banking services. This can result in a reliance on costly alternative financial services such as predatory check cashing services. Immigration status can be a significant factor affecting financial stability. Undocumented individuals may face additional challenges in accessing certain financial resources or services. Financial literacy is a universal need, but it may be particularly essential for those who are navigating a new financial system in a new country. Lack of financial knowledge can lead to poor financial decisions.
The Impact of Providing Financial Services
Now, let's shift our focus to the positive impact of providing tailored financial services to the Hispanic community in Jacksonville:
Empowerment Through Education
Financial educators such as Alive’s team of Financial Wellness Coaches, play a vital role in equipping members of the Hispanic community with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed financial decisions. This empowerment can break down barriers and create a path to financial stability.
Building Trust
By establishing trust and fostering relationships within the community like at the upcoming Viva La Fiesta event, Alive is able to encourage more individuals to utilize banking services, reducing their reliance on costly alternatives.
Access to Affordable Services
Offering affordable and accessible financial services can make a significant difference in the lives of Hispanic residents. This includes providing our free and low-fee banking options, affordable and non-discriminatory loans, and savings programs.
Financial Inclusion
Ultimately, the goal is financial inclusion. By ensuring that all members of the Hispanic community have access to mainstream financial services, we create a more equitable and prosperous city for everyone.
In conclusion, providing financial services to the Hispanic community in Jacksonville goes beyond banking; it's about building bridges to financial stability and success. By understanding the unique challenges faced by this community and tailoring our services to meet their needs, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of our Hispanic neighbors. Together, we can work towards a more financially inclusive and prosperous Jacksonville for all.

Change is inevitable, and as we prepare for the upcoming merger with City & Police Federal Credit Union, it's essential that we approach this transition with positivity and enthusiasm. Change can be challenging, but it also presents us with remarkable opportunities to make an even more significant impact on our community.
Expanding Our Reach
One of the most exciting aspects of this merger is the potential to reach more members of our community. By joining forces with City & Police Federal Credit Union, we can extend our financial services to a broader audience, including those who may have been underserved in the past. This expansion aligns perfectly with our mission to empower our community through financial education and support.
Strength in Unity
Together, we become stronger. The merger allows us to combine our resources, expertise, and experience. This synergy will enable us to offer a more extensive range of financial products and services to our members. As a credit union team member, this means that you'll have even more tools at your disposal to help the under and unbanked community improve their financial wellness.
Enhanced Partnerships
Change brings new opportunities for collaboration. As we integrate with City & Police Federal Credit Union, we will have the chance to build new partnerships and strengthen existing ones. These connections will be invaluable in our mission to serve the community better.
Personal and Professional Growth
Embracing change also provides opportunities for personal and professional growth. As we adapt to new processes and systems, we'll acquire new skills and knowledge that can benefit us in our current roles and future endeavors.
Community Impact
Ultimately, the goal of this merger is to enhance our ability to make a positive impact on the lives of our community members. By coming together, we can provide more comprehensive and accessible financial solutions, thereby improving the financial wellness of those we serve.
In conclusion, change is not something to fear; it's something to embrace. Our merger with City & Police Federal Credit Union is a testament to Alive’s commitment to the community. It's an exciting step forward, and I encourage each one of you to approach this change with optimism and a sense of purpose. Together, we will continue to empower and uplift our community through financial education and support.
A message from CEO Rose Gunter:
Over the past 18 months, our Board and Senior Management have developed a relationship with City & Police FCU that has evolved into a partnership that will unite our financially strong and healthy institutions. Together, we will continue to be dedicated to serving those on the frontline, including healthcare, law enforcement, and City of Jacksonville workers as well as our existing select employee groups. This strategic merger, which is pending the approval of its members and our regulators, will increase our resources to add value to both memberships, make a greater impact in the communities we serve, and provide our employees with more growth opportunities.
The merger will expand our branch network and increase potential opportunities for expansion and innovation. Our combined credit union will operate under the Alive brand and our current State charter. We will add a tagline to our logo that identifies police, city, and healthcare. We will retain the same friendly faces and provide the service our members are accustomed to at both of our credit unions, which have very similar cultures.
Once the merger is completed, as early as December 31st, Aaron Logue, City & Police FCU’s CEO will become Alive’s CEO. Those of you who know Aaron can attest to his strong character work ethic, and commitment to the credit union movement. He will be a great leader for our credit union. Aaron worked with us from 2010 – 2012 as AVP of Compliance & Risk Management before becoming the CEO of CPFCU, and before that, he was our auditor with Smoak Davis and Nixon. He served on the NEFL Chapter board for nine years, including as the President for several years. He currently serves on LSCU’s Florida Advocacy Committee. Our senior officers will remain the same: Cindy Smith, SVP Operations, Ricky Joshi, CFO, Shanaz Abadi, VP Member Experience, and Jocelyn Jones, VP Lending. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed working in two credit unions for over 43 years and will greatly miss the meaningful work we do, and each of you. However, my husband and I have really been looking forward to my retirement for quite a while.
Both credit unions plan to announce to our members next week after each of you has had time to learn additional details about this wonderful opportunity that will mutually benefit both of our credit unions. Please reach out to me with any questions or bring them to our training sessions next week. We will have additional information and commonly asked questions that will help answer any member’s questions.
On behalf of our Board of Directors and Senior Management team, who unanimously endorse this merger, thank you in advance for supporting our efforts to grow and preserve the legacy of both credit unions.
In 2016, Alive initiated a special partnership with Bacon County Hospital (BCH). Located in Alma, Georgia, approximately two hours north of Jacksonville, BCH has been serving the small community of 3,000 residents since its establishment in 1952.
Despite Bacon County's rural setting, its residents are known for their vibrant spirit and love for outdoor activities. While driving down Main Street, you're likely to spot boats, 4-wheelers, bikes, side-by-sides, and big trucks. With a population of 11,000, economic growth opportunities are limited, but the humble Bacon residents are diligent savers. Those who open shares at Alive are particularly drawn to our Holiday Club Account.
Alma is renowned for its annual Blueberry Festival, a cherished tradition where the community comes together to celebrate the significance of their blueberry crop and express gratitude to those involved in its production. The festival offers a plethora of entertainment, activities, and mouthwatering food.
BCH lives by the motto, "You're in my care," and strives to be a regional leader in patient safety, quality, and service excellence. Much like Alive, BCH recognizes that regardless of the number of patients they serve, everyone deserves top-notch care. One way in which Alive can support our Bacon County Hospital members is by acknowledging their pivotal role within the community and offering education on credit, as this rural area often lacks access to reputable lending institutions.
Have you had the chance to meet any BCH members? The next time you receive a call or encounter a member visiting from Bacon County, which they frequently do to shop in Jacksonville, make a point to connect with them and express your gratitude for their unique membership with us. Additionally, we'd love to hear your suggestions for the next Select Employee Group (SEG) we should spotlight. Please share your ideas in the comments below!
As the seasons change and the cool air meets the warm, storms begin to brew in the ocean and within the financial scape. Criminals are clever and know that during a time of crisis, they can try to take advantage of unsuspecting victims. As our members’ chosen financial institution, we are often the first line of defense when it comes to preventing scams. Hurricane season is upon us now so let’s brush up on best practices and common occurrences when it comes to hurricane scams.
Fraudulent emails
We are all well-versed in spotting phishing emails but often times our members are not. During a hurricane, criminals can capitalize on sending malicious links and attachments. Often, cybercriminals will send emails that convey an urgency that may seem more likely in a hurricane. You may remember that last year, there were several JEA email scams. If a member comes in to request a wire or you see suspicious activity on their online banking, ask extra questions to gently sus out if it is a genuine transaction or if they are being victimized.
Charity scams
Unfortunately, the scams do not end after the storm has passed. Every year more and more charity scams pop up. On social media it is very easy to read a sad story and feel compelled to donate to a cause. Prior to making a donation — especially a generous one— guide our members to fact check. If they are requesting a wire or check cut for a charity be sure to check out the charity’s website. You can also check the state’s charity regulator website to see if it is legit. You can find the register for your state here.
Post-Disaster Insurance Scams
There are two varieties of insurance scams. In some cases, members may receive a call from a criminal posing as an insurance agent who will ask for all of their personal information. They may even suggest that they need payment right away to start the insurance claim. This is untrue. Advise members to hang up and call the insurance company directly. Policyholders with the National Flood Insurance program can call 1-800-638-6620.
Another post-disaster scam that can occur in the midst of an emergency is when a member comes upon a fraudulent insurance check. Remember to follow the hold policy and make your supervisor aware if you notice anything suspicious about any monetary instrument.
The most important thing to remember is that members can feel stressed, worried, overwhelmed, and upset before and after a natural disaster. Operating with empathy and understanding, as we always do at Alive, provides our members a special safe haven of security. Stop and think about any of our members requests and guide them towards safe financial practices during this season— just as we do every season.

In a world where financial stability and literacy are crucial skills, Alive Credit Union has taken up the mantel to make a tangible difference. Community Development & Financial Wellness Coaches, the driving force behind the financial literacy initiatives at Alive Credit Union, have been transforming lives and shaping futures throughout the year. As we pass the halfway-marker to a remarkable year, it's time to reflect on the incredible strides made in spreading financial knowledge and empowerment.
High School 9:12 Financial Literacy Bootcamp
The year started with a resounding success as we continued our partnership with High School 9:12 to deliver an intensive 6-week financial literacy bootcamp. The impact of this initiative is simple, equipping young minds with essential life skills that go beyond the classroom. From budgeting basics to understanding the nuances of credit, participants emerged from the program with newfound confidence and financial clarity.
We will be continuing this initiative with our fall series featuring all new materials and even more engagement with our invaluable resources from Banzai beginning September 18th. Please see upcoming events for more information!
Deepening Relationships through education
Throughout the year we have provided short seminars and get-to-know-us events for some of our existing partners such as Chad & Sandy Realty, Consor Moving, and Lutheran Social Services. If you have a business or foundation that may be interested in getting to know our credit union, reach out to Hali or Christian to set up an interactive and meaningful seminar.
Nurturing Financial Literacy in Local Schools
Summer became a season of outreach as we embarked on a journey to local high schools, including Terry Parker, Riverside, Andrew Jackson, and Westside, through the Communities in School Summer Camps. We also visited Lutheran Social Services After School Program, NLP Logix Coding Summer Camp, and the ARC’s High School High Tech Summer Camps. These sessions were bite-sized yet impactful, covering the fundamental aspects of opening bank accounts, cultivating a savings mindset, and laying the foundation for building a strong credit history. These efforts ensured that financial education reached young minds during a time when they were most receptive.
Monthly Financial Wellness Webinars
One of the cornerstones of Alive's initiatives was the launch of the monthly financial wellness webinars. This virtual platform allowed members to engage with financial experts and gain insights from the comfort of their homes. The inclusivity of this approach meant that geographical barriers were shattered, enabling a broader audience to access valuable financial guidance. Whether attending live or catching up on the replays, participants were armed with practical knowledge to make informed decisions.
Stay tuned to the free webinars that come out on the second Wednesday of each month. Our members can register to join live on the Alive website, or catch the replay on Youtube!
#FinancialFreedomFridays: A Social Media Movement
Alive has also demonstrated a keen understanding of the digital age by embracing social media as a tool for change. The inception of #FinancialFreedomFridays showcases our commitment to making financial literacy bite-sized and accessible. Through engaging and educational reels, members were treated to succinct yet impactful tips, transforming their Fridays into stepping stones toward financial empowerment.
A Special Gift on the Horizon: Spreading Holiday Cheer
As the year approaches its grand finale, Alive has created a special team of merry elves including Mark, Dylan, Christian, and Hali to prepare a special educational gift for all Alive Credit Union members. This December promises to be a season of giving, as members can look forward to a resource that encapsulates the essence of financial empowerment. The anticipation builds as Alives dedication to transforming lives continues to shine.
From intensive boot camps to virtual webinars, the initiatives undertaken in 2023 have redefined the landscape of financial education. Through collaboration, innovation, and a genuine desire to make a difference, Alive has taken strides toward a more financially empowered society.
As we eagerly await the December surprise, let's take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of empowering financial literacy. The impact has been immense, and the future holds the promise of even greater strides toward a world where financial knowledge is a cornerstone of success.

Who they are
The Clara White Mission was founded in 1904 but dates back to the 1880s in Jacksonville when former slave Clara English White began feeding her hungry neighbors out of her home on Clay Street. Her daughter, Dr. Eartha M. M. White would become a renowned humanitarian and work to build the Clara White Mission into a centenarian foundation not only focused on housing and feeding the hungry and displaced but also providing vocational programs to put people to work.
Along the way, the White Harvest Farm was built into the foundation. At White Harvest Farm, the foundation is not only able to grow organic food to feed the nearly 1000 families they aid each week, but to also act as a community hub for education on self-sustainability, urban gardening, and urban beekeeping.
Involvement
Recently CARES activated a group of volunteers to go out to the White Harvest Farm for a day volunteering in the August sun as they reap the last of the summer harvest and prepare for fall. Together, the volunteers tackled several projects for the foundation including digging holes for irrigation, shoveling and loading mulch, and harvesting hibiscus buds for tea and jelly. We were able to harvest over 14 lbs of hibiscus buds and process them to be ready for use to feed the community.
How you can get involved
The White Mission Farm seeks volunteers every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. If you have not yet reached your VTO goal for the year, and are interested in making a meaningful impact on the community while working in the garden, you can enroll in the volunteer slots they have available at their website linked here. The Farm also has a weekly Farms Market on Saturdays to fund its efforts and offer affordable workshops to teach food sustainability skills to those who are interested.

August 14th is National Financial Awareness Day! This is a day when we are able to highlight the importance of using the strategy and mindset of financial awareness in order to reach financial wellness.
Financial awareness includes:
Understanding how to save money
Knowing your income
Having and knowing your spending plan
Protecting your money
Knowing when to borrow money
Understanding credit and how to use it properly
Knowledge of different accounts (CD, Savings Share, IRA, etc)
Having and knowing a long-term investment plan
One way we can assist our members on Financial Awareness day is sharing our financial resources especially free financial coaching. We offer several free resources, all available on the Alive CU website, such as:
In addition to the resources on our website, we also integrate Financial Wellness through our social media channels in several ways:
We have even more financial resources rolling out soon so keep an eye out! Remember you can always turn to our internal team of Financial Coaches (currently Jess & Hali) for support in best serving our members Financial Wellness needs.
Please try to share one of the resources listed above with each of your members on Financial Awareness Day and make yourself more familiar with one of our financial wellness programs such as Drive with Alive, Credit Builder loans, or the Fresh Start Checking Accounts.
Alive has been a partner of Brooks Rehab for several years. The depth and breadth of Brooks Rehabilitation’s community programs are unique from any other health program. They provide adaptive sports, Aphasia care in the Brain Injury Clubhouse, as well as state of the art therapeutic services. It isn’t just the state of the art equipment that makes an impact on our community, but also the care the Brooks staff give to their patients in and outside of working hours. Brooks employees donate nearly $150,000 of their own money annually to provide to individuals with differing abilities. They also donate much of their time.
Jess Parmenter and Hali Hagist, both Alive CARES members, saw this first hand on July 15th while volunteering at the 15th Annual Adaptive Surfing event. The adaptive surfing event has well over 100 volunteers, a majority of which are Brooks employees, assisting the mentally and physically challenged with an engaging surf experience. Some individuals may be recovering from a stroke, while others may be quadriplegics. No matter what each individual brings to the table, Brooks ensures each and every person is treated with dignity and given a chance to make a splash!
Brooks has 610 active participants in their Adaptive Sports and Recreation program the Jacksonville area. This program offers fitness and friendship to participants of all ages. Brooks has a wide range of adaptive sports it offers including:
Archery
Billiards
Boccia
Bowling
Cycling
Dance
Fishing
Golf
Kayaking
Mindfulness based Yoga
Movie Nights
Power Soccer
Rowing
Surfing
Trap Shooting
Water Skiing
Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair Rugby
This program would not be possible without volunteers like Hali and Jess who earned 5 additional hours towards Alive’s 300 hour goal! CARES has also teamed up with Brooks for a School Supply Drive organised by the Brooks School Re-entry Program. You can see pictures from all volunteer events under the Team Pictures page!
This year in addition to our typical member engagement and branch celebrations, we had our first ever Credit Union Spirit Award.
What is the Credit Union Spirit?
Credit union spirit refers to the fundamental principles and values that guide the operation and culture of credit unions. At its core, credit union spirit embodies the essence of cooperative ownership, member-centric service, and community support. Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions owned and governed by their members, who are also customers. This unique structure fosters a strong sense of community, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
The credit union spirit emphasizes the importance of putting members' needs first, offering competitive and transparent financial services, and promoting financial literacy and empowerment. Credit unions are committed to building lasting relationships with their members, often tailoring their products and services to meet specific needs and circumstances.
Furthermore, credit union spirit extends beyond individual members to the communities they serve. Credit unions are active in supporting local initiatives, charitable causes, and community development, with a focus on improving the financial well-being of their members and neighbors.
The 2023 Credit Union Spirit awardees
This year two individuals were nominated repeatedly with a common explanation of deep connection to the Credit Union Movement. Congratulations to both of Alive’s Credit union Spirit Award winners!
Jessica Parmenter
Jess has worked at Alive Credit Union as a Teller, Member Service Representative, and now as the Touchton Branch Supervisor. Over the years Jess has been active in Healthy Habits and CARES. She is always a mentor to teammates around her. One except from a nomination stated “Jess works hard for both our internal and external members. Even when it is a bit overwhelming, she cares for their concerns with a smile.” Another nomination read “every time I have ever had to call Jess, she is always very helpful and pleasant. She always helps me and calls me back if I don't reach her. I know she is very busy but always happy to help you.” Jess, today your peers solute you as embodying the Credit Union philosophy of People Helping People.
Shanaz Abadi
Shanaz has worked at Alive Credit Union for many years. Shanaz has worn many hats and mentored most Alive team members during her tenure. Shanaz shines at supporting both external and internal members, providing support of each individuals career path or member’s financial wellbeing. One nomination read “Shanaz's compassion and empathy for our members and employees is truly remarkable.” While another team member shared, “She is very good with the members, and they love her. They miss her when she is not here or anytime that they don't see her.” Shanaz, we are all grateful for the impact you make on us as a Credit Union and proudly recognize you as a representation of the Credit Union Movement.
Once again, CARES will be bringing the beloved “Top Pet Contest” back to help raise funds for the American Heart Association.
Each year, Alive animal lovers share their pets in the contest with a $5 entry fee. Then all employees vote in $1 increments for the “Top Pet”.
All proceeds go towards the Heart Walk. This year, Team Captain Jess has raised the bar and set our donation goal to $2,500. Jess has participated in the Heart Walk for the past four years either working the table event or being part of the team encouraging donations. Jess shared, “I love that Alive participates in the Heart Walk each year because it gives employees a chance to rally together to help support a great cause and shows how dedicated Alive is to supporting it’s community.”
Are you interested in seeing if your pet has the stuff to be a star? Share your picture or video today. Voting begins July 31st! For more information, check out the Top Pet Contest page.
